A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 (Operating System) and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown processing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
The md driver (drivers/md/md.c) in the Linux kernel before 2.6.30.2 might allow local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference) via vectors related to "suspend_* sysfs attributes" and the (1) suspend_lo_store or (2) suspend_hi_store functions. NOTE: this is only a vulnerability when sysfs is writable by an attacker.
The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was presented 08/18/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2849. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 236 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67929 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2009-1455)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116971 (VMware ESX Service Console and vMA Third Party Updates (VMSA-2010-0004)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (52858) and Tenable (67929). See 47137, 50482, 50420 and 50329 for similar entries.
