Digium Asterisk up to 1.4.10 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IAX2 protocol implementation in Asterisk Open Source 1.2.x before 1.2.35, 1.4.x before 1.4.26.2, 1.6.0.x before 1.6.0.15, and 1.6.1.x before 1.6.1.6; Business Edition B.x.x before B.2.5.10, C.2.x before C.2.4.3, and C.3.x before C.3.1.1; and s800i 1.3.x before 1.3.0.3 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (call-number exhaustion) by initiating many IAX2 message exchanges, a related issue to CVE-2008-3263.

The weakness was released 09/08/2009 by Noam Rathaus (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-2346. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40885 (Asterisk IAX2 Call Number Exhaustion DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Denial of Service.

Upgrading to version 1.4.11 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53038), Tenable (40885), SecurityFocus (BID 36275†), SecurityTracker (ID 1022819†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-23498†).
