Check Point VPN-1/SecureClient up to 1.4.1 SP5 ISAKMP stack-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Check Point VPN-1 and SecureClient up to 1.4.1 SP5 (Network Encryption Software). Affected is an unknown function of the component ISAKMP Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a stack-based overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-121. A stack-based buffer overflow condition is a condition where the buffer being overwritten is allocated on the stack (i.e., is a local variable or, rarely, a parameter to a function). This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in Check Point VPN-1 Server 4.1 through 4.1 SP6 and Check Point SecuRemote/SecureClient 4.1 through 4.1 build 4200 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an ISAKMP packet with a large Certificate Request packet.

The bug was discovered 02/02/2004. The weakness was shared 02/04/2004 by Chris Wysopal with ISS X-Force (Website). The advisory is shared for download at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0040. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version 4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at securityfocus.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2378. In this case the pattern |07| is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 31735.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (14150). Further details are available at checkpoint.com.
