Sun VirtualBox 3.0.0/3.0.2/3.0.4/3.0.6 Configuration Tool privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun VirtualBox 3.0.0/3.0.2/3.0.4/3.0.6. It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code of the component Configuration Tool. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in the VBoxNetAdpCtl configuration tool in Sun VirtualBox 3.0.x before 3.0.8 on Solaris x86, Linux, and Mac OS X allows local users to gain privileges via unknown vectors.

The weakness was published 10/06/2009 by prdelka with SuSE (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-3692. The exploitation appears to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by prdelka in Shell File and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42060 (FreeBSD : virtualbox -- privilege escalation (ebeed063-b328-11de-b6a5-0030843d3802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 3.0.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53671), Tenable (42060) and Exploit-DB (9973).
