Microsoft .NET Framework 1.0 SP3, 1.1 SP1, and 2.0 SP1 does not properly validate .NET verifiable code, which allows remote attackers to obtain unintended access to stack memory, and execute arbitrary code, via (1) a crafted XAML browser application (XBAP), (2) a crafted ASP.NET application, or (3) a crafted .NET Framework application, aka "Microsoft .NET Framework Pointer Verification Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 10/14/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0090 since 01/07/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/18/2018). MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42117 (MS09-061: Vulnerabilities in the Microsoft .NET Common Language Runtime Could Allow Remote Code Execution (974378)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context local. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90547 (Microsoft .NET Common Language Runtime Multiple Vulnerabilities (MS09-061)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8646.
