Microsoft Windows code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version unknown) and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Windows Media Runtime, as used in DirectShow WMA Voice Codec, Windows Media Audio Voice Decoder, and Audio Compression Manager (ACM), does not properly process Advanced Systems Format (ASF) files, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted audio file that uses the Windows Media Speech codec, aka "Windows Media Runtime Voice Sample Rate Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 10/14/2009 by Vinay Anantharaman with Adobe (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-0555 since 02/11/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/18/2018). The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42107 (MS09-051: Vulnerabilities in Windows Media Runtime Could Allow Remote Code Execution (975682)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90546 (Microsoft Windows Media Runtime Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-051)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8645.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53514) and Tenable (42107). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 4044, 50451, 50449 and 50448.
