The weakness was shared 10/19/2009 by Stefano Di Paola with Apple Product Security (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-2997 since 08/27/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42119 (Adobe Acrobat < 9.2 / 8.1.7 / 7.1.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APSB09-15)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165657 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Acroread, acroread_ja (SUSE-SA:2009:049)).

Upgrading to version 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 10965.
