Oracle Database up to 9.2.0.4 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Oracle Database up to 9.2.0.4 (Database Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in Oracle 9i 9 before 9.2.0.3 allow local users to execute arbitrary code by (1) setting the TIME_ZONE session parameter to a long value, or providing long parameters to the (2) NUMTOYMINTERVAL, (3) NUMTODSINTERVAL or (4) FROM_TZ functions.

The bug was discovered 12/12/2003. The weakness was released 02/06/2004 by Cesar Cerrudo and Mark Litchfield with NGSSoftware (Website). The advisory is available at nextgenss.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-1208 since 05/19/2005. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 56 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12047 (Oracle Database 9i Multiple Functions Local Overflow), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases and running in the context r.

Upgrading to version 9.2.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at metalink.oracle.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2651. In this case the pattern NUMTO is used for detection. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2712.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15060) and Tenable (12047). heise.de is providing further details. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 81938, 81939 and 81940.
