Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.15 and 3.5.x before 3.5.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.0, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted regular expression in a Proxy Auto-configuration (PAC) file.
The weakness was presented 10/29/2009 by regenrecht with iDEFENSE as MFSA2009-55 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-3372. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42307 (SeaMonkey < 2.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119087 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1530)).
Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
