Mozilla Firefox before 3.0.15 and 3.5.x before 3.5.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.0, does not properly handle a right-to-left override (aka RLO or U+202E) Unicode character in a download filename, which allows remote attackers to spoof file extensions via a crafted filename, as demonstrated by displaying a non-executable extension for an executable file.

The weakness was disclosed 10/29/2009 by Jesse Ruderman as MFSA2009-62 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is available at This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-3376. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592.004 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42295 (CentOS 4 : firefox (CESA-2009:1530)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119087 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2009:1530)).

Upgrading to version 1.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
