TYPO3 up to 4.2.0 Encryption Key information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in TYPO3 up to 4.2.0 (Content Management System) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Encryption Key. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The Backend subcomponent in TYPO3 4.0.13 and earlier, 4.1.x before 4.1.13, 4.2.x before 4.2.10, and 4.3.x before 4.3beta2 allows remote authenticated users to determine an encryption key via crafted input to a tt_content form element.

The weakness was published 11/02/2009 by Bernhard Kraft (Jelmer) (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-3628. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42404 (FreeBSD : typo3 -- multiple vulnerabilities in TYPO3 Core (6693bad2-ca50-11de-8ee8-00215c6a37bb)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175007 (Debian Security Update for Typo3 (DSA-1926)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (53917) and Tenable (42404). Similar entries are available at 50673, 50672, 50671 and 50670.
