Sun JRE/JDK prior 1.6.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun JRE and JDK (Programming Language Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Java Update functionality in Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in Sun Java SE in JDK and JRE 5.0 before Update 22 and JDK and JRE 6 before Update 17, when a non-English version of Windows is used, does not retrieve available new JRE versions, which allows remote attackers to leverage vulnerabilities in older releases of this software, aka Bug Id 6869694.

The weakness was published 11/05/2009 by Peter Vreugdenhil (regenrecht) with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-3864. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Java. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42857 (SuSE 11 Security Update : Sun Java 1.6.0 (SAT Patch Number 1542)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116678 (Sun Java JDK and JRE Multiple Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 1.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54123) and Tenable (42857). Similar entries are available at 4206, 50752, 50750 and 50749.
