Microsoft Windows resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The SMB client in the kernel in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Windows 7 allows remote SMB servers and man-in-the-middle attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite loop and system hang) via a (1) SMBv1 or (2) SMBv2 response packet that contains (a) an incorrect length value in a NetBIOS header or (b) an additional length field at the end of this response packet, aka "SMB Client Incomplete Response Vulnerability."

The weakness was released 11/13/2009 by Laurent Gaffie (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-3676 since 10/13/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Python. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45507 (MS10-020: Vulnerabilities in SMB Client Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980232)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90592 (Microsoft SMB Client Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-020)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9274.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54217) and Tenable (45507). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 4105, 52781, 52780 and 52779.
