A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in WordPress up to 2.0.4 (Content Management System). Affected is the function wp_check_filetype
of the file /wp-includes/functions.php of the component mod_mime. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. Unrestricted file upload vulnerability in the wp_check_filetype function in wp-includes/functions.php in WordPress before 2.8.6, when a certain configuration of the mod_mime module in the Apache HTTP Server is enabled, allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code by posting an attachment with a multiple-extension filename, and then accessing this attachment via a direct request to a wp-content/uploads/ pathname, as demonstrated by a .php.jpg filename.
The weakness was disclosed 11/12/2009 by Dawid Golunski (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-3890 since 11/05/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.
By approaching the search of inurl:wp-includes/functions.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42808 (FreeBSD : wordpress -- multiple vulnerabilities (0640198a-d117-11de-b667-0030843d3802)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116849 (Fedora Update for wordpress-mu (FEDORA-2009-12547)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54255) and Tenable (42808). The entry 50833 is pretty similar.
