Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in ISC BIND up to 9.3.0 (Domain Name Software). This affects some unknown functionality of the component DNS Cache. This is going to have an impact on integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Unspecified vulnerability in ISC BIND 9.0.x through 9.3.x, 9.4 before 9.4.3-P4, 9.5 before 9.5.2-P1, 9.6 before 9.6.1-P2, and 9.7 beta before 9.7.0b3, with DNSSEC validation enabled and checking disabled (CD), allows remote attackers to conduct DNS cache poisoning attacks by receiving a recursive client query and sending a response that contains an Additional section with crafted data, which is not properly handled when the response is processed "at the same time as requesting DNSSEC records (DO)," aka Bug 20438.
The weakness was presented 11/23/2009 with UC Berkeley as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-4022. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67965 (Oracle Linux 5 : bind (ELSA-2009-1620)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 15057 (ISC BIND 9 DNSSEC Bogus NXDOMAIN Response Remote Cache Poisoning Vulnerability).
A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54416), Tenable (67965), SecurityFocus (BID 37118†), OSVDB (60493†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24176†).
