A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Linux Kernel 2.6.28.2 (Operating System). This affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a race condition vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-362. The product contains a code sequence that can run concurrently with other code, and the code sequence requires temporary, exclusive access to a shared resource, but a timing window exists in which the shared resource can be modified by another code sequence that is operating concurrently. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:
Race condition in the mac80211 subsystem in the Linux kernel before 2.6.32-rc8-next-20091201 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (system crash) via a Delete Block ACK (aka DELBA) packet that triggers a certain state change in the absence of an aggregation session.
The issue has been introduced in 12/25/2008. The weakness was shared 12/02/2009 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at kernel.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-4027 since 11/20/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/28/2021).
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 342 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 63932 (RHEL 5 : kernel (RHSA-2010:0380)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165244 (SUSE Security Update for Kernel (SUSE-SA:2010:001)).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (54571) and Tenable (63932). The entries 51129, 51127, 51068 and 50978 are related to this item.
