Sun Ray Server Software 4.1 Firmware cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

Sun Ray Server Software 4.0 and 4.1 does not generate a unique DSA private key for the firmware on each Sun Ray 1, 1g, 100, and 150 DTU device, which makes it easier for remote attackers to obtain sensitive information by predicting a key and then using it to decrypt sniffed network traffic.

The weakness was released 12/11/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared at sunsolve.sun.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-4295 since 12/11/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/28/2021). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product decreasing in the near future.MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35194 (Solaris 10 (sparc) : 127553-08), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks.

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (35194). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 49064, 49063, 49062 and 51120.
