A vulnerability was found in GNU Samba 3.0/3.0.0/3.0.1 (File Transfer Software). It has been rated as critical. The mksmbpasswd shell script (mksmbpasswd.sh) in Samba 3.0.0 and 3.0.1, when creating an account but marking it as disabled, may overwrite the user password with an uninitialized buffer, which could enable the account with a more easily guessable password.
The weakness was disclosed 02/10/2004 as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2004-0082. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
