Wireshark 1.2.0/1.2.1/1.2.2/1.2.3/1.2.4 daintree_sna_read memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Wireshark 1.2.0/1.2.1/1.2.2/1.2.3/1.2.4 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected is the function daintree_sna_read. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in the daintree_sna_read function in the Daintree SNA file parser in Wireshark 1.2.0 through 1.2.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted packet.

The weakness was released 12/17/2009 with Wireshark as Bug 4294 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugs.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-4376 since 12/21/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 08/30/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 43350 (Wireshark / Ethereal 0.9.0 to 1.2.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165236 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2010:007)).

A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (43350). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 47258, 52078, 51975 and 51728.
