. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
SQL injection vulnerability in the get_history_lastid function in the nodewatcher component in Zabbix Server before 1.6.8 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via a crafted request, possibly related to the send_history_last_id function in zabbix_server/trapper/nodehistory.c.
The weakness was presented 12/31/2009 by Alex (Website). The advisory is shared at support.zabbix.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-4499. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47179 (Fedora 11 : zabbix-1.6.8-1.fc11 (2010-0278)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116848 (Fedora Update for Zabbix (FEDORA-2010-0266, FEDORA-2010-0278)).
Upgrading to version 1.4.4 eliminates this vulnerability.
