Apple Safari HREF cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari (Web Browser) (the affected version unknown). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is an unknown part. The manipulation of the argument HREF with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Apple Safari allows remote attackers to discover a redirect s target URL, for the session of a specific user of a web site, by placing the site s URL in the HREF attribute of a stylesheet LINK element, and then reading the document.styleSheets[0].href property value.

The weakness was presented 01/14/2010 by Cesar Cerrudo (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-0314. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52523 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : webkit (MDVSA-2011:039)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116827 (Apple Safari Stylesheet Redirection Information Disclosure Vulnerability - Zero Day).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (52523), SecurityFocus (BID 37925†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24726†).
