A vulnerability has been found in phpMyAdmin up to 2.5.6-rc1 (Database Administration Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component Directory Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity.

The weakness was disclosed 02/17/2004 by Tim Yamin with Gentoo (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.netsys.com. The attack can be launched remotely. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1006 for this issue.

It is possible to download the exploit at lists.netsys.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at cvs.sourceforge.net. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
