Sun OpenSolaris up to Snv 128 ucode_get_rev input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Sun OpenSolaris up to Snv 128 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function ucode_get_rev. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:

The ucode_ioctl function in intel/io/ucode_drv.c in Sun Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris snv_69 through snv_133, when running on x86 architectures, allows local users to cause a denial of service (panic) via a request with a 0 size value to the UCODE_GET_VERSION IOCTL, which triggers a NULL pointer dereference in the ucode_get_rev function, related to retrieval of the microcode revision.

The weakness was published 01/31/2010 by Tobias Klein (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-0453. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Patroklos Argyroudis in ANSI C and been published 1 weeks after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44357 (Solaris 10 (x86) : 143913-01), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks.

A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (55991), Tenable (44357) and Exploit-DB (11351). Similar entries are available at 49238, 52784, 52783 and 52752.
