Integer underflow in the clean_string function in irc_string.c in (1) IRCD-hybrid 7.2.2 and 7.2.3, (2) ircd-ratbox before 2.2.9, and (3) oftc-hybrid before 1.6.8, when flatten_links is disabled, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (daemon crash) via a LINKS command.
The weakness was presented 02/04/2010 (Website). The advisory is available at debian.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-4016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175059 (Debian Security Update for Ircd-hybrid/ircd-ratbox (DSA-1980)).
Upgrading to version 2.0.10 eliminates this vulnerability.
