Microsoft Windows code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (affected version unknown). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The SMB implementation in the Server service in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 does not properly validate request fields, which allows remote authenticated users to execute arbitrary code via a malformed request, aka "SMB Pathname Overflow Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 02/10/2010 by Joshua Morin with Codenomicon (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-0020 since 12/14/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation needs a simple authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by laurent gaffie and been published 3 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44422 (MS10-012: Vulnerabilities in SMB Could Allow Remote Code Execution (971468)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90579 (Microsoft SMB Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-012)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9442.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (55906), Tenable (44422) and Exploit-DB (12273). The entries 4105, 51810, 51809 and 51808 are related to this item.
