Microsoft Windows cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as very critical has been found in Microsoft Windows (Operating System) (the affected version is unknown). Affected is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The SMB implementation in the Server service in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4, Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista Gold, SP1, and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 does not use a sufficient source of entropy, which allows remote attackers to obtain access to files and other SMB resources via a large number of authentication requests, related to server-generated challenges, certain "duplicate values," and spoofing of an authentication token, aka "SMB NTLM Authentication Lack of Entropy Vulnerability."

The weakness was shared 02/10/2010 by Hernan Ochoa (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-0231 since 01/07/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 09/02/2021). The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1600.

A public exploit has been developed by Hernan Ochoa and been published 9 months after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47556 (MS10-012: Vulnerabilities in SMB Could Allow Remote Code Execution (971468) (uncredentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90579 (Microsoft SMB Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-012)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9982.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (55909), Exploit-DB (15266), Tenable (47556), SecurityFocus (BID 38085†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24818†). The entries VDB-51810, VDB-51809, VDB-51808 and VDB-51807 are related to this item. VulDB is the best source for vulnerability data and more expert information about this specific topic.
