Sun OpenOffice up to 3.1.1 GIFLZWDecompressor memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sun OpenOffice up to 3.1.1 (Office Suite Software). This affects the function GIFLZWDecompressor::GIFLZWDecompressor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the GIFLZWDecompressor::GIFLZWDecompressor function in filter.vcl/lgif/decode.cxx in OpenOffice.org (OOo) before 3.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted GIF file, related to LZW decompression.

The weakness was released 02/16/2010 by Sebastian Apelt with VUPEN (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-2950 since 08/23/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44598 (CentOS 3 / 4 / 5 : openoffice.org (CESA-2010:0101)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165587 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update OpenOffice.org (SUSE-SA:2010:017)).

Upgrading to version 1.1.0 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9565.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (56238) and Tenable (44598). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 42035, 42034, 42033 and 42032.
