Symantec Client Security up to 3.0 denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

The on-demand scanning in Symantec AntiVirus 10.0.x and 10.1.x before MR9, AntiVirus 10.2.x, and Client Security 3.0.x and 3.1.x before MR9, when Tamper protection is disabled, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (prevention of on-demand scanning) via "specific events" that prevent the user from having read access to unspecified resources.

The weakness was shared 02/17/2010 by Jeffrey Walton (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0106 since 12/31/2009. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69956 (Symantec AntiVirus Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM10-002 / SYM10-003 / SYM10-004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.

Upgrading to version 3.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (56354) and Tenable (69956). The entries 51944 and 51900 are related to this item.
