A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 2.4.24/2.6.2 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function do_mremap
. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The do_mremap function for the mremap system call in Linux 2.2 to 2.2.25, 2.4 to 2.4.24, and 2.6 to 2.6.2, does not properly check the return value from the do_munmap function when the maximum number of VMA descriptors is exceeded, which allows local users to gain root privileges, a different vulnerability than CAN-2003-0985.
The weakness was shared 02/18/2004 by Paul Starzetz with isec.pl (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at isec.pl. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-0077. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
The exploit is shared for download at securiteam.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15290 (Debian DSA-453-1 : linux-kernel-2.2.20-i386+m68k+powerpc - failing function and TLB flush), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (15244), Tenable (15290) and Exploit-DB (154). Further details are available at vuldb.com.
