libpurple in Finch in Pidgin before 2.6.6, when an XMPP multi-user chat (MUC) room is used, does not properly parse nicknames containing <br> sequences, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted nickname.
The weakness was shared 02/18/2010 by Fabian Yamaguchi (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vupen.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-0420 since 01/27/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45560 (Debian DSA-2038-1 : pidgin - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116919 (Red Hat and Solaris Update for Pidgin (RHSA-2010:0115)).
Upgrading to version 2.5.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
