Stack-based buffer overflow in the SMTP service support in vsmon.exe in Zone Labs ZoneAlarm before 4.5.538.001, ZoneLabs Integrity client 4.0 before 4.0.146.046, and 4.5 before 4.5.085, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a long RCPT TO argument.
The bug was discovered 02/18/2004. The weakness was published 02/18/2004 by Riley Hassell (DiGiT) with eEye Digital Security as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0309. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
Upgrading to version 4.5.594.000 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at zonelabs.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
