IBM Informix Dynamic Server up to 11.10.x portmap.exe memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in IBM Informix Dynamic Server up to 11.10.x (Information Management Software). It has been declared as very critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality in the library librpc.dll of the file portmap.exe. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The software performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in the authentication functionality in librpc.dll in the Informix Storage Manager (ISM) Portmapper service (aka portmap.exe), as used in IBM Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) 10.x before 10.00.TC9 and 11.x before 11.10.TC3, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted parameter size.

The weakness was shared 03/05/2010 by Sebastian Apelt (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-2753 since 08/12/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/03/2017). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

It is declared as proof-of-concept.

Upgrading to version 11.10.xc3 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 5937.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at SecurityTracker (ID 1023669) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25119). The entry 52055 is related to this item.
