Apple Safari up to 4.0.4 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple Safari up to 4.0.4 (Web Browser). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) implementation in WebKit in Apple Safari before 4.0.5 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via crafted format arguments.

The weakness was released 03/15/2010 by Robert Swiecki with Apple (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-0046. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by Tim Brown and been published 3 years after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 47365 (Fedora 11 : qt-4.6.2-8.fc11 (2010-4524)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118282 (Fedora Update for qt (FEDORA-2010-8423)).

Upgrading to version 4.0.0b eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9720.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (47365) and Exploit-DB (22406). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 6847, 6848, 6849 and 6851.
