PHP up to 5.2.12 uniqid cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in PHP up to 5.2.12 (Programming Language Software). This affects the function uniqid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-310. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The Linear Congruential Generator (LCG) in PHP before 5.2.13 does not provide the expected entropy, which makes it easier for context-dependent attackers to guess values that were intended to be unpredictable, as demonstrated by session cookies generated by using the uniqid function.

The weakness was released 03/26/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at vupen.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-1128 since 03/26/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45029 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : php (MDVSA-2010:058)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155575 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for PHP (ELSA-2010-0919)).

Upgrading to version 5.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (45029), SecurityFocus (BID 38430†), Secunia (SA38708†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-24952†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-3695, VDB-5786, VDB-5794 and VDB-9021.
