Apple iOS 3.1.3 code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apple iOS 3.1.3 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Safari on Apple iPhone OS 3.1.3 for iPod touch allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors related to an array of long strings, an array of IMG elements with crafted strings in their SRC attributes, a TBODY element with no associated TABLE element, and certain calls to the delete operator and the cloneNode, clearAttributes, and CollectGarbage methods, possibly a related issue to CVE-2009-0075.

The issue has been introduced in 02/02/2010. The weakness was released 03/26/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at exploit-db.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-1176 since 03/29/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 52 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (11891). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 52425, 52424, 52423 and 52422.
