The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in QuickTimeAuthoring.qtx in QuickTime in Apple Mac OS X before 10.6.3 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted FLC file, related to crafted DELTA_FLI chunks and untrusted length values in a .fli file, which are not properly handled during decompression.
The weakness was released 03/30/2010 by Moritz Jodeit (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as HT4077 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-0520. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec in Python and been published 7 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45372 (Mac OS X 10.6.x < 10.6.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 10.6.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (45372) and Exploit-DB (15035). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 50877, 52475, 52474 and 52473.
