The byterange filter in the Apache HTTP Server 1.3.x, 2.0.x through 2.0.64, and 2.2.x through 2.2.19 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory and CPU consumption) via a Range header that expresses multiple overlapping ranges, as exploited in the wild in August 2011, a different vulnerability than CVE-2007-0086.
The bug was discovered 08/23/2011. The weakness was disclosed 01/17/2012 by kingcope (Website). The advisory is shared for download at oracle.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-3192 since 08/19/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
