Integer overflow in Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x before 9.5.1 and 10.x before 10.1.3 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted TrueType font.

The weakness was shared 04/10/2012 by Peter Vreugdenhil as TPTI-12-04 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at dvlabs.tippingpoint.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0774 since 01/18/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 172 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74602 (openSUSE Security Update : acroread (openSUSE-SU-2012:0512-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165300 (SUSE Security Update for Update for Acroread (openSUSE-SU-2012:0512-1)).

Upgrading to version 9.5.1 or 10.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12807.
