Samba up to 3.6.x GetAliasMembership numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Samba up to 3.6.x (File Transfer Software). It has been declared as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function GetAliasMembership. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The RPC code generator in Samba 3.x before 3.4.16, 3.5.x before 3.5.14, and 3.6.x before 3.6.4 does not implement validation of an array length in a manner consistent with validation of array memory allocation, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted RPC call.

The weakness was released 04/10/2012 by Brian Gorenc as ZDI-12-069 (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is shared at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2012-1182 since 02/14/2012. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The price for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/24/2019).

A public exploit has been developed in Python. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 173 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 74601 (openSUSE Security Update : samba (openSUSE-SU-2012:0508-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185007 (HP-UX CIFS Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (HPSBUX02789)).

Upgrading to version 3.6.4, 3.5.14 or 3.4.16 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at samba.org.Proper firewalling of Ports 137-139 is able to address this issue. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12199. The filter is assigned to the category Vulnerabilities.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (74601). Additional details are provided at networkworld.com. Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 5277, 5279, 5284 and 5285.
