The weakness was presented 04/20/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared at jira.atlassian.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2010-1164. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
By approaching the search of inurl:groupnames.jsp it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45578 (Atlassian JIRA 500page.jsp Referer XSS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses : XSS. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 150233 (Atlassian JIRA Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
