Mozilla Thunderbird up to 1.4 HREF input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Thunderbird up to 1.4 (Mail Client Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation of the argument HREF with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The nsIScriptableUnescapeHTML.parseFragment method in the ParanoidFragmentSink protection mechanism in Mozilla Firefox before 3.5.17 and 3.6.x before 3.6.14, Thunderbird before 3.1.8, and SeaMonkey before 2.0.12 does not properly sanitize HTML in a chrome document, which makes it easier for remote attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript with chrome privileges via a javascript: URI in input to an extension, as demonstrated by a javascript:alert sequence in (1) the HREF attribute of an A element or (2) the ACTION attribute of a FORM element.

The weakness was presented 04/28/2010 by Jesse Ruderman as Bug 562547 as not defined bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1585 since 04/28/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68213 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 / 6 : firefox (ELSA-2011-0310)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119024 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2011:0310)).

Upgrading to version 1.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (68213). See 55713, 56689, 56688 and 56687 for similar entries.
