A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Moodle (Learning Management Software). Affected is the function add_to_log
in the library lib/form/selectgroups.php. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Multiple SQL injection vulnerabilities in Moodle 1.8.x before 1.8.12 and 1.9.x before 1.9.8 allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands via vectors related to (1) the add_to_log function in mod/wiki/view.php in the wiki module, or (2) "data validation in some forms elements" related to lib/form/selectgroups.php.
The weakness was disclosed 04/29/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-1615. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1505.
By approaching the search of inurl:lib/form/selectgroups.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 49717 (Debian DSA-2115-1 : moodle - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.
Upgrading to version 1.9.3 eliminates this vulnerability.
