Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the docshell implementation in Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 11.0, Firefox ESR 10.x before 10.0.4, Thunderbird 5.0 through 11.0, Thunderbird ESR 10.x before 10.0.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.9 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors related to short-circuited page loads, aka "Universal XSS (UXSS)."

The weakness was disclosed 04/24/2012 by Jordi Chancel, Eddy Bordi and Chris McGowen as MFSA 2012-27 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0474 since 01/09/2012. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A private exploit has been developed by Chris McGowen. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58850 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2012:0515)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120189 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:0515)).

Upgrading to version 12.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (58850). The entries 5005, 5301, 5303 and 5304 are pretty similar.
