Microsoft VISIO 2002/2003/2007 VISIODWG.DLL memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Affected by this issue is an unknown functionality in the library VISIODWG.DLL. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Buffer overflow in VISIODWG.DLL before 10.0.6880.4 in Microsoft Office Visio allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted DXF file, a different vulnerability than CVE-2010-0254 and CVE-2010-0256.

The weakness was shared 05/06/2010 by CORE Security with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1681. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 09/08/2021).

A public exploit has been developed by Abysssec in Python and been published 5 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 45515 (MS10-028: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Visio Could Allow Remote Code Execution (980094)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90590 (Microsoft Visio Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS10-028)).

Upgrading to version 2003 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11507.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (58346), Tenable (45515) and Exploit-DB (14944). The entries 36918, 45611, 47197 and 51442 are related to this item.
