HP OpenView Network Node Manager 7.53 getnnmdata.exe iCount memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in HP OpenView Network Node Manager 7.53 (Network Management Software). It has been rated as very critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the file getnnmdata.exe. The manipulation of the argument iCount with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Stack-based buffer overflow in getnnmdata.exe in HP OpenView Network Node Manager (OV NNM) 7.01, 7.51, and 7.53 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an invalid iCount parameter.

The weakness was presented 05/13/2010 by S2 Crew with Zero Day Initiative as confirmed posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is available at marc.info. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1554. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 01/26/2025).

A public exploit has been developed by S2 Crew in Python and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46261 (HP-UX PHSS_40705 : s700_800 11.11 OV NNM7.01 Intermediate Patch 13), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family HP-UX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 42031 (HP OpenView Network Node Manager Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (HPSBMA02527)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9547.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (14181), Tenable (46261), SecurityFocus (BID 40071†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25765†).
