A vulnerability was found in VMware Workstation, Player, Fusion, ESXi and ESX (Virtualization Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component Floppy Device. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. VMware Workstation 8.x before 8.0.3, VMware Player 4.x before 4.0.3, VMware Fusion 4.x through 4.1.2, VMware ESXi 3.5 through 5.0, and VMware ESX 3.5 through 4.1 do not properly configure the virtual floppy device, which allows guest OS users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write operation and VMX process crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code on the host OS by leveraging administrative privileges on the guest OS.

The weakness was shared 05/03/2012 as VMSA-2012-0009 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vmware.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-2449 since 05/01/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at vmware.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem.
