PostgreSQL up to 8.2.10 access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The PL/Tcl implementation in PostgreSQL 7.4 before 7.4.29, 8.0 before 8.0.25, 8.1 before 8.1.21, 8.2 before 8.2.17, 8.3 before 8.3.11, 8.4 before 8.4.4, and 9.0 Beta before 9.0 Beta 2 loads Tcl code from the pltcl_modules table regardless of the table s ownership and permissions, which allows remote authenticated users, with database-creation privileges, to execute arbitrary Tcl code by creating this table and inserting a crafted Tcl script.

The weakness was released 05/18/2010 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-1170 since 03/29/2010. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation requires a authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46695 (CentOS 3 : postgresql (CESA-2010:0427)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118289 (Fedora Update for PostgreSQL (FEDORA-2010-8696)).

Upgrading to version 8.2.11 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (46695). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at 53258 and 53255.
