Apple Java for Mac OS X 10.5 before Update 7 and Java for Mac OS X 10.6 before Update 2 do not properly handle mediaLibImage objects, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds memory access and application crash) via a crafted applet, related to the com.sun.medialib.mlib package.

The weakness was released 05/21/2010 by Marc Schoenefeld (Website). The advisory is available at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-0538 since 02/03/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 46673 (Mac OS X : Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118040 (Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2 and Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 7 (APPLE-SA-2010-05-18-1, APPLE-SA-2010-05-18-2)).

Upgrading to version 10.5 eliminates this vulnerability.
