A vulnerability was found in SourceFire ClamAV up to 0.96.0 (Anti-Malware Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function cli_pdf. The cli_pdf function in libclamav/pdf.c in ClamAV before 0.96.1 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a malformed PDF file, related to an inconsistency in the calculated stream length and the real stream length.

The weakness was presented 05/26/2010 as Bug 2016 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at wwws.clamav.net. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-1639 since 04/29/2010. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1499 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 52591 (Fedora 15 : clamav-0.97-1500.fc15 (2011-2732)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 118051 (ClamAV PDF Processing Denial of Service Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 0.96.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
