Adobe Photoshop CS4 prior 11.0 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Adobe Photoshop CS4 (Image Processing Software). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Multiple buffer overflows in Adobe Photoshop CS4 before 11.0.2 allow user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) .ASL, (2) .ABR, or (3) .GRD file.

The bug was discovered 08/08/2009. The weakness was presented 05/26/2010 by Gjoko Krstic with Zero Science Lab (Website). The advisory is available at adobe.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2010-1296 since 04/06/2010. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by LiquidWorm in ANSI C and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 291 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.

Upgrading to version 11.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9865.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (58888) and Exploit-DB (12751).
